Montargis, the Venice of the Gâtinais
In the north-east, Montargis is organised around its Briare Canal and its many bridges: more than 130 footbridges cross the channels. Flower-filled quays, pedestrian streets and the Wednesday morning market set a romantic, understated scene. For a date, a coffee by the water followed by a walk to the medieval castle makes for a quiet, pleasant morning.
Gien, Pithiviers and sweet treats
East of the département, Gien’s blue-patterned faïence can be visited in the historic factory on the banks of the Loire. In Pithiviers, two specialities compete: the frangipane pithiviers and the honey pithiviers. Sharing either one after a stroll through a small pink-brick town makes a sweet, gentle date, ideal for keeping the conversation flowing.
Beaugency and Loire banks
To the west, Beaugency lines up its medieval bridge, César tower and Renaissance mansions. Boatmen offer rides on the Loire in traditional toue boats. On Lyad, members from the Loiret share their favourite towns and routes; it is up to you to find someone to change address every weekend and keep exploring.
